Cohort and Low Income Dropout Rate

The cohort on-time graduation rate is the number of seniors that were expected to graduate that year, based upon their enrollment year as freshmen.  This data is not available prior to the 2002-2003 school year because of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, which disaggregated reporting on graduation rates and applied new definitions to reporting.  Also, students who received an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a GED, as well as students whose status was unknown, are considered dropouts.

In Pierce County, the cohort graduation rate and the low-income graduation rate remain below counties like ours.  The graduation rate for low-income students has remained markedly lower than the overall cohort graduation rate during the reporting period, which is similar to what is experienced in counties like ours across the state.

The overall cohort graduation rate in Pierce County for the 2009-2010 school year was 73.7 percent, an improvement from 70.4 percent at the end of the previous school year.  This means that seven out of 10 students in Pierce County are graduating on time.  The low-income cohort graduation rate rose to 66.4 percent during the 2009-2010 school year from 59.9 percent the previous school year.  This means that two out of three low-income students are graduating on time.
