Percent of 4th Graders Meeting State Reading Standard

The chart below shows the percent of 4th grade students in Pierce County that passed the statewide reading assessment in addition to the results for students across the state. In the 5 year period between the 2005-06 and 2010-11 school years the percent of 4th grade students who passed the state assessment trended downward from a high of 80% to a low of 68%. This trend was also evident at the state level, and in that time period Pierce County students passed the 4th grade reading assessment with roughly the same frequency as students across the state.

In the 2011-12 school year the percentage of 4th graders in Pierce County who passed the assessment rose by roughly 4% from 67.8 to 71.6% of students and again, this increase was also realized at the state level. In sum, more 4th grade students in both Pierce County and across the state passed the state reading assessment in the 2011-12 school year than did in the previous two school years.

The chart below shows the percentage of 4th graders that met the state reading standard in in the 2011-12 school year by school district compared to the Pierce County average and Washington State as a whole. Tacoma and Clover Park School Districts have the greatest deal of improving to do as they have passage rates of 63.3% and 64.4% respectively, while Peninsula and Dieringer top the list with 84.3% and 94.2% passage rates.
