Educational Funding Election Results
The state educational apportionment to local schools is not adequate to fund basic education in our schools, let alone maintenance and operation costs and capital projects such as new schools. Local tax levies and bond issues are brought to voters in an attempt to make up the difference between what the state provides local schools and the real cost of educating our children. Since 2001, there have been 94 educational funding levies on the ballot in Pierce County. 62 of those levies (66%) were passed by voters for a total of over $3.6 billion, while 32 of the educational levies, totaling almost $2.9 billion failed to pass. Maintenance and Operations Levies were passed 44 out of 52 times (85%), Capital Project Levies passed 6 out of 8 times (75%) and general issue bonds passed 12 out of 34 times (35%). |
