New Units

Local nonprofit developers are working to increase the number of housing units affordable to low-income people. According to the Pierce County Affordable Housing Task Force, it would take 180 new units per year for the next 208 years to meet the current shortfall.

Using the 2007 data from the housing consortium, excluding planned development, there has been a 13% increase (nearly 500 new units) in affordable housing including those that are under construction.    In May 2007, there were 3,891 units of affordable housing stock, in May of 2010, that number had increased to 4,299 with another 354 units planned.

The Tacoma Pierce County Affordable Housing Consortium, whose members are local nonprofits or quasi-governmental agencies, is committed to addressing funding challenges, regulatory barriers such as cumbersome permitting processes, affordable housing advocacy and showcasing affordable housing projects built in our community.  United Way of Pierce County remains a presence in this important work, as well as partnering with the City of Tacoma in the Affordable Housing Trust Fund Demonstration Project as part of their strategy to increase the number of units on the ground.
